Genre Research: Mystery

The Mystery genre has a had a decent popularity in films nowadays and the wide variety of aspects and work that goes into these films really brings it all together creating something thar truly represents “Mystery”. Common camera angles that are featured in most films include Over the Shoulder and Medium camera shots usually bringing the attention the characters seen on screen. Bird’s eye view and Close ups are also extremely common either to show the scenery or emphasizing something on the screen. Sounds that are most commonly used in these films include Dialogue which can be heard when a particular character on or off screen is speaking to someone or something. Ambient Noise can be heard when theres a particular silence in the scene but you can still hear the smaller less noticeable noises like Birds chirping outside. Mis-en-scene plays a very important part in Mystery films, Costumes that represent and fit with the theme of the film really makes it look natural and fitting as well as the Makeup that is put on actors such as Contour and Blush Cremes for subtle looks, nothing too flashy. Speaking of actors, Classical acting also plays a major role and actors will act according to their scripts. Lighting helps to create a specific theme for the scene that may play out in the film which makes it feel like what it is attempting to represent. Props are most definitely present but are most likely unnoticed if not emphasized. Last but not least and a major part that really ties the film together is the Editing, edits like Cutaways and Cuts helps scenes go from one to another and Fading and Transitions help make these scene cuts look a lot more smoother and less awkward when the final product is released

Some Films that fall under the Mystery Genre include The Lovebirds, The Girl on The Train and Dark Places. Personally I do find Mystery Films to be quite enjoyable because most stories usually have something that the audience can solve along with the characters in the film and once figured out and solved it can be very satisfying for the audience to feel like they partook in solving the mystery. However an element I do dislike is when cliches are included, when the “mysterious” part of the film wasn’t very mysterious to begin with and it may be super obvious that the outcome of the film will end on those cliches.
