Research Blog: Music Video Conventions


The song I am doing for my Music Video is After the Storm by Kali Uchis,

In the Music Video for this song it shows vibrant and saturated scenes, showing the singer peacefully doing daily routine tasks while also singing.

- The singer wears very colorful clothes, which appear to be from the 90’s. She is wearing things like formal dresses with heels, and a almost tracksuit like outfit that seems meant for the outdoors.

-Props in the Music Video include things like canned foods, a cereal box, notepads, watering can, seeds, and many other items that are for daily use.

- Her appearance is very calm and collected, she isn’t seen doing much but in a way it is very beautiful and fits the theme of the Music Video

- The score starts off gentle which then cuts to the feature artist Tyler the Creator rapping his part in a fast pace which makes it more catchy and upbeat, it gives the audience a sudden boost of happiness in a way because of the flow of how the artist is singing and how catchy it is.

1. Conventions and Codes in this Music Video is the repeated lyric of “After the Storm” emphasizing that after dark times the “Flowers will bloom” which signifies good times coming your way afterwards regardless of what you have gone through

2. in this song it describes the pains of sadness and stress people can face but afterwards, you can bloom into a happier situation, it is all controlled by the person itself.

3. This song and Music Video gives the audience a sense of motivation, for anyone who struggle with their lives right now it makes them feel passionate and worthy because they know they can over come whatever they are faced with at the moment if they actually put in that effort.

Final Day of Filming for my Music Video

On the second day of filming, I finished filming all of the storyboard panels for my music video. I have to say that it was not an easy task. I had a lot of time to myself, so I decided to use that time to actually finish everything, but it wasn't easy because it felt like a time crunch even though I was free to do whatever I wanted. There were still a lot of scenes to finish from where I had left off, and I had to refilm some of them because the clips were too blurry for the final product. I also recorded scenes that I would edit into the music video to give it more personality and easter eggs, which sort of fits the theme of my music video anyway. It was also difficult to change costumes because I play both characters and edit myself into it. It's a difficult task, but it's not impossible.   - What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? The opening sequence has one title card that starts with the name of the movie, starting off from white to red   - What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? One image that gets prioritized heavily is the phone of Casey Becker. Another thing that gets prioritized is the house such as the doors, the kitchen, the stove. - What connotations do these images carry? The phone shows a mysterious voice that keeps on dialing her. The stranger continuously asks odd questions that begin to get intimidating. The movie uses the phone as a way to scare the viewer as the ringing continues.  For my Commerical Project, I will work alone. I think its the best way to go for me because I'm not really trusting of other people because I have no actual clue if they'll do the work or not and in the past I've had lots of issues with people not completing what they're supposed to be doing even with my friends. I can't really rely on others so that's why I'm holding full responsibility for this project. Working alone isn't terrible either, on the bright side I won't have to nudge people into doing their work until they get annoyed with me because I hate being a bother to others as well. Being independent also means this project will be my own unique thoughts without interference. I like working out ideas by myself although critique is necessary I want this project to be my own authentic piece and my own authentic ideas. Having other people's ideas doesn't really make this my own and I may not like what others come up with so I trust myself...
